Quiet!

In actual work-related news, my WhisperRoom arrived today. Fifteen boxes of assorted sizes and weights. My plan was to unload all of the boxes from the truck to the garage myself, and then assemble the whole thing when Stef got home.

This was a silly idea.

The truck didn't arrive until 4:45 this afternoon, and although the driver was quite helpful about getting the boxes off the truck, I still had to haul most of them the length of the driveway before I could plop them down on the floor of the garage. I must be really out of shape, because I was wiped after the second 78-pound wall box, and there were still 4 more to go (including the ceiling and floor). I wasn't very psyched about moving them again into the house. Apparently, Stef felt the same way. The last thing she wanted to do after a long day at work was lug dense, carpeted fiberboard panels around the house.

The instructions say that two people can easily assemble these units. They don't, however, say how long it will take those two people. It's not like the assembly doesn't make sense. It's no more complicated than your average IKEA project. It's just time consuming making sure everything fits properly, and when you don't actually start the attempt until 7 pm, the excitement fades quickly.

So, we've abandoned the project for tonight. Rather than my goal of a fully-functional isolation booth, we have two gray walls and a floor. It looks like a minimalist art installation. We'll pick up where we left off tomorrow, tackling the more complicated pieces like the door and the ventilation system so I don't suffocate.

Pictures will follow. Wish us luck.

Why don't you just get that cone of silence like they had on Get Smart? Or are those still only available to the military?

Does it come with a stool, a black turtleneck, beret and sunglasses? Because for some reason I just can't see you in that thing without all of the above.

Joe, you wouldn't believe the kind of permits you have to fill out for one of those things. Background checks, cavity searches, the works. I thought it would be better to just get one of these things online.

Ben, this isn't an imaginary box. It's real. And heavy!

I've been in that studio - Hell, recorded in it - and I can't for the life of me figure out where you're going to put this new thing.

It's a 3.5 by 5 foot box that sits against the far wall where the audio desk used to be. Said desk is now along the left wall, blocking the door to the bathroom (although that door now makes a nice access panel for cable hookup). It's a pretty imposing box, and it shrinks the room down to about 2/3 of it's former size. It'll give me a lot of incentive to keep the room very clean and organized.

What did you do with the doors with sound dampeners that you had up before? Those were funny...

I've kept the makeshift sound booth panels around just in case I needed to do any recording while the WhisperRoom was being built. Most likely, I will canibalize the sound foam on the old doors for use inside the booth itself.

Put it to constant good use -- start a podcast starring all of your characters. Personally, I'd like to hear the old master from Ninja Scroll tutoring Harry.
